Strength You Can Feel, Safe Enough to Use

At Twelve Mile Recovery in Ontario, trauma informed martial arts offers a unique and empowering approach to overcoming addiction by integrating physical discipline with mental resilience. This innovative program not only helps individuals rebuild their strength and confidence but also provides them with coping mechanisms to navigate through the challenges of recovery.

What it is

What is Trauma-Informed Martial Arts?

Trauma-informed martial arts for addiction is an evidence-based approach to healing and recovery. It combines the physical discipline of martial arts with the psychological insights of trauma-informed care, offering people working through addiction a route back to control over their own lives.

By putting movement together with therapeutic principles, participants can release stress, build resilience, and process the underlying experiences that so often sit beneath addictive behaviour. It addresses body and mind at once, and what it builds is strength, self-awareness and a sense of renewal on the way through recovery.

How it helps

Healing That Lives in the Body, Not Only the Mind

Trauma-Informed Martial Arts offers a unique pathway to recovery by addressing the body and mind’s interconnected healing needs. This approach understands that trauma is stored not just mentally but also physically, in the body’s memory. By integrating martial arts practices, individuals are taught techniques that foster self-awareness, discipline, and physical strength, which simultaneously nurture mental resilience.

These practices empower individuals by giving them control over their own bodies, which can be particularly transformative for those whose traumas involved physical disempowerment or abuse. The repetitive nature of martial arts training creates a meditative effect, helping participants to focus on the present and slowly release the grip of past traumas.

As they learn new skills and build physical strength, they also cultivate confidence and a renewed sense of personal power—key components in the journey towards recovery.

Reclaiming Control

Trauma can leave the body feeling unsafe. Moving with intention returns a felt sense of control, often profound for people carrying trauma.

Discipline & Resilience

Repetition builds a steadiness and mental resilience that carry off the mat and into the rest of recovery.

Present-Moment Focus

Training asks for your full attention, quieting rumination and anchoring you in the here and now.

Confidence & Personal Power

Real skill, earned gradually, rebuilds self-worth and a sense of your own strength.

With Twelve Mile

Trauma-Informed Martial Arts With Twelve Mile

We built this into the program because of what trauma does to a person’s mental and physical wellbeing, and because talking is not always the way in. Practiced as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, it gives people a way to meet what is underneath the addiction through the body rather than only through conversation.

It is trauma-informed the whole way through, which is the part that matters: the pace is yours, the contact is consented to, and nothing about it is designed to overpower you.
